Internship Post 8

As my final post on my journey as an intern, I just want to reflect on my experience as a whole. When I first started applying for internships, I was really nervous that nobody would be interested in my profile. I was applying for multiple internships daily. I think the worst feeling was not hearing back after applying. I'd much rather get an email back saying that I was not a match or that thae positions were filled rather than not hearing anything at all. Also, a little disheartening was the location of a lot of the internships that I was most interested in. I found that many of the more intriguing ones were far away. It would cost quite a lot to  intern for free at those places. It took a few days of applying to multiple internships before I heard anything back. The interview process was not bad and I actually really enjoyed talking to the recruiter though I was still very nervous, especially since I was on a time constraint to find an internship. I was unofficially offered the internship on the spot though I didn't get my formal letter and welcome packet/handbook for a few days afterward and didn't begin work for about a week or two after that. The work is pretty self explanatory and it is fulfilling because I know my work is helping toward giving someone else education in art. I've learned a lot about my personal likes and dislikes working in the art field. Overall it has been a great experience and I'm a little sad that my work with the company is coming to a close. I look forward to working in the art world and I want to thank my intern coordinators for this eye-opening experience.

Internship Post 7

I think the benefit of working for a non-for profit company is that everyone is working for passion, not necessarily for a paycheck. Basically everyone is an intern because nobody is getting paid (as I understand) but the people with seniority are working hard because they really believe in the mission. It is proof that money is not the foundation of everything and that sometimes people just do things because if they don't, nobody will. I haven't necessarily had to interact with many people during my internship but the people I have dealt with are extremely nice and understanding. I think that they are just excited that someone else is interested in what they are working toward and so interested that they don't even mind not getting paid. Its a great feeling to be an equal with someone in a company, even if you're not completely equal in your titles.

Internship Post 6

I've realized that I do not really enjoy editing tags. Part of my internship duties include reviewing the website's tags for correctness, spelling etc. and also eliminating rarely used tags. It is such a slow process. As busy work, it's fine, especially if I'm bored and need something to do (which never happens lately) but otherwise it is a painstaking job to edit countless numbers of tags that are being added to. It's like the job that never ends. It's not that I hate it, because I can think of many other things that tag editing is so much better than. It's just not the most exciting part of my internship.

Internship Blog 5

My internship is great but it makes you realize how small the internet is. We do a lot of internet based research and because the company is so small and the interns all do short stints, we never know what the other is doing. The most disappointing thing is finding what you think is a great source and later finding out that someone beat you to it. It's a little discouraging because sometimes it takes hours to find credible sources and outlets. It's just another thing to work through, I guess.

Internship Post 4

I love my internship and because I do, I can say that I put a lot of effort into finding quality information to share with them. This sourcing and searching takes a lot of time...a lot more time than I assumed it would at the beginning of my internship. I find that sometimes it leaks into my regular life. Though I document my physical work with them on my progress report, I feel like I am always working to find better and better arts information to share with them. My coordinator really likes my finds (she calls my work "gems") and all the positive feedback and reinforcement makes me want to work harder. I don't mind working when I feel that my hard work is noticed. I feel like I'm the kind of person that works best when I get consistent and regular feedback, whether it is good or bad. I just like to know how I'm doing and how I can improve. Lately, in my real (paying work not internship) job, which I used to enjoy, we only get feedback when we're not doing enough. That doesn't motivate me to work because even if I see my growth, if my company doesn't, I feel unappreciated. I don't think you should have to bring up your accomplishments to your boss. At CourseWorld, I get the feedback I crave and so when I find something I think that they would benefit from, Im excited to share it with them whether its at 3am or 2pm because I know they are grateful for my enthusiasm.

Internship Blog Post #3

The one thing I rally enjoy about my internship is the freedom it allows me. Though they do review everything I post, edit, and suggest, they automatically trust that I will provide quality information and material. My boss often tells me upon our weekly check-in's that she really enjoys my work. Also, because I am providing a report detailing everything I did for the week, down to the minutes it took to do them, the allow me to work at my own pace and on my own hours, given I complete all my tasks and all the criteria is met.
This is such a great internship and I'm just so happy that I was chosen out of many applicants for such a wonderful opportunity.

Internship Blog Post 2

I am still enjoying my internship! I love that the company is up and coming, so my contribution is laying groundwork for the future. I really believe in what CourseWorld is doing. I think that with the rise of the internet and smart phones, people really have the world in their hands. Also, we are providing a service that is near impossible to find.  You can go many places online to learn about topics like math and science but its hard to find a free place that provides education on the arts. This company is a labor of love as nobody is paid, yet the website is up and running and continues to grow. I am proud to be working for CourseWorld.

Internship Blog Post #1

I really enjoy my internship at CourseWorld. CourseWorld is a non-for-profit company that aims to to be the hub of free liberal arts education via video lectures. I currently have two jobs with CourseWorld; in one of my roles I source educational lectures about art, theater, and fashion for the company's site. Also, I am a quality control guru for tagging posts and videos on their website.

I report to a lady named Stella, she's a wonderful boss. Every week I send her a report of my work throughout the week. This progress report lays out specific metrics of just how productive I was throughout the week. It is also the place where I detail what my goals are for the coming week, my concerns, and any questions that I may have.

Overall I believe CourseWorld is a great company to work for and I really enjoy it so far.

Let Them Eat Pancakes!: Re-imagining Marie Antoinette.

Disclaimer: I'm super excited about my last project of the semester, but as with all good things in my life, something has gone slightly awry. I recently had to do a little purge on my phone for lack of available memory and accidentally lost many if not all of the images of my progress. Nevertheless, I do have many photos of the last few steps and the end result.

I'm not sure what IHOP and 18th century France have to do with one-another but somehow, in my mind, they are connected. I'd like to think it has to do with the sweet pancakes + syrup combo and Marie's love of sweets and confections, but I doubt there's any remotely logical explanation for my thought process. Now you may be wondering why I'm rambling about breakfast foods and establishments that claim to be international but probably are not...but it was during a drive to IHOP that I got the idea for this 3D project.

The Unicorn Taxidermy.

It's absolutely no secret that I love unicorns. I love them as much as if they were real animals. I mean who's to say they never were, right? There's parts of the ocean that we haven't discovered, even with all the technology we have, so I can believe that there once were unicorns on this planet that educated people once thought was flat and that dragons and turtles and hell itself was keeping it afloat in space. Unicorns were mentioned in the bible, you know. Maybe there are unicorns at the bottom of the ocean...mermaids riding sea-unicorns. I'd like to believe that.

There is no question that I'd like to show my eternal adoration for this majestic creature...by having its head on my wall. A little morbid and odd, I know. I looked up unicorn taxidermies (faux of course, I would never intentionally hurt the poor dears) and they're pretty pricey. It's justifiable, I mean who wouldn't want one? But, because I'm poor and creative, I decided to make a taxidermy of my own.

Master Post: Modern Art Inspired Floral Arrangements

I had this idea...an idea that I thought couldn't fail...boy was I wrong.
"Nighthawks" x Edward Hopper

My idea was to recreate the color schemes and placement of color in some of my favorite artworks using flowers. In retrospect, I think the notion I had was interesting but would take a lot more skill than I currently have. You know what they say: hindsight is 20/20.

My inital decision was to work with color schemes that I believed were easy on the eye and easy to recreate. With that to guide me, I chose two of my favorite paintings: ("The Son Of Man" by Rene Magritte and "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper) and dove right into what I later would find was grueling and time-consuming piece-work. I was so excited to make this a success.
